Former French President Jacques Chirac To Face Corruption Charges 22 days ago
(RTTNews) - An investigating judge on Friday ordered former French President Jacques Chirac to stand trial on corruption charges dating from his term as the mayor of Paris.
Investigating Judge Xaviere Simeoni on Friday ordered Chirac and nine of his former aides to face charges relating to 21 allegedly fake contracts issued during the former President's term as Paris mayor.
Chirac is charged with embezzlement and breach of trust relating to allegations that he created 21 contracts for fake jobs between October 1992 to May 1995, when he was the mayor of Paris.
Chirac, who has served as the mayor of Paris from 1977 until he was elected president in 1995, has denied any wrongdoings and has denied the charges pressed against him. He faces 10 years in prison, along with a fine of ?150,000, if convicted of the charges.
Following the judge's order, office of the former French President said in a statement that he was "serene and determined to prove in court that none of the jobs still being debated were fake," adding that Chirac believes that he is required to "answer to the justice system like everyone else."
Paris public prosecutor Jean-Claude Marin is likely to appeal against the judge's order trial order as he has stated in the recent past that there was no case to make against Chirac, who served as the French President from 1995 to 2007.
