Haitian Prime Minister Ousted In Censure Vote

(RTTNews) - The Haitian Prime Minister Michele Pierre-Louis has been voted out of power by the Senate Friday, according to reports from the capital, Port-au-Prince.

A no-confidence resolution in protest against her failure to effectively promote economic recovery in the country was passed after 18 Senators voted in its favor in the 29-member Senate.

The parliament, which voted in her absence after midnight, "will write to the president to inform him of our decision," said Senate leader Kelly Bastien.

Supporters of Pierre-Louis challenged the vote, saying the MPs had no power to remove the head of government in a special session without clear instructions from President Rene Preval.

The inability of the Prime Minister to survive the censure means the cabinet will also be dissolved.

The change at top may affect efforts to attract foreign investment to the storm-wracked, impoverished Caribbean country, reports say.

Pierre-Louis became the head of government in September last year, as Haiti was under the grip of one of four tropical storms and hurricanes that killed nearly 800 people, left tens of thousands homeless and caused $1 billion in damage.

Friday, lawmakers from Pierre-Louis' own party accused her of failing to appropriately use the $197 million storm-recovery funds.
