Some Bangla Opposition Leaders Behind Kill Hasina Plot: Report 24 days ago
(RTTNews) - A report in a Bangladesh daily claims the plot to assassinate incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a 2004 grenade attack was hatched by opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders, employing banned Islamist outfit Harkatul Jihad (HuJI).
"The Daily Star" said in its investigative report the "chilling conspiracy" to kill Hasina was hatched at Hawa Bhabhan, the office of Tarique Rahman, eldest son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
The newspaper, citing some conspirators, said on August 14 of 2004, nine persons gathered at Hawa Bhaban to discuss a recommendation following a series of earlier meetings, where Hasina's Awami League was branded as the arch enemy of the country and Islam, and it was recommended that she must be eliminated.
The next day, the same group met once more at the same venue to explore ways to accomplish the mission when the "fugitive killer suggested Hasina be attacked at her home, on road or at a rally."
They finally settled for a rally, just six days away, and the former junior minister for Home Litfuzzaman Babar, currently in prison for illegally possessing arms, supplied the grenades, while HuJI was used as the mercenary group, the report said.
Hasina survived the attack but one of her ears was severely damaged. More than 20 of her party workers, including the wife of the current President Zillur Rahman, were killed.
The paper said the report was based on a "highly-privileged document" it had obtained, and the information collected by its reporter from investigators and intelligence officials involved in the investigations over the last five years.
Meanwhile, in a move that widens the police investigation into the attack, which was initially blamed on Islamic militants, Bangladesh police said Lutfozzman Babar was a suspect in connection with the deadly grenade attack on Hasina. A senior police officer investigating the case, said the police had sought court permission to interrogate him for 10 days.
